Vintage 1990s George Gross dress
I very much know the history of this vintage George Gross dress. Made in either 1989 or 1990, this elegant black and white dress with applique detailing is by high-profile Australian designer in the 1980s and 1990s, George Gross. My own sister wore this dress on her wedding day as her ‘going away outfit’. I was 16 at the time and always thought she looked so chic and grown-up as she headed off on her new married life! She wore it to a couple of other family weddings but has honestly only been worn a handful of times. She married in May 1990, so I estimate the dress was designed and made in 1989. I can picture this looking absolutely fabulous on Derby Day, or any occasion where classic style and detailing are the order of the day. The dress is double-breasted with all its original buttons and internal press-studs, plus shoulder pads which are stitched in, but could easily be removed if you prefer. The lower half of the dress is lined with a white nylon. It is tagged as a vintage size 10 but please check the measurements below.
About the designer: George Gross
George Gross is one of Australia’s best-known fashion designers known for his glamorous evening wear, corporate and race wear ranges. He created his first piece at the age of 16.
The George Gross label was first established in Adelaide by Gross and his partner Harry Watt – the pair also founded the famous ‘Harry Who’ label. Also joining the business was George’s twin sister Kathy – the trio began the George Gross label in a small Adelaide store in 1973 and expanded to include more than 500 retailers worldwide at the height of their business. Their designs were worn by Princess Diana (who purchased six of their pieces from Harrods in London), Elle Macpherson, Joan Collins, Kerri-Anne Kennerley and Maggie Tabberer. They represented Australia at the Bicentennial Wool Collection fashion event at Sydney Opera House in 1988. In the mid-1990s Gross and Watt won the contract to design the uniforms of Qantas staff – the first time an Australian label had won that opportunity. The pair closed their labels in 2014 after 40 years in the industry.
